Frequently asked Terrazzo questions

  • Terrazzo origins trace back to over 500 years ago in Venice, Italy. Venetian artisans would take discarded chips from marble slabs and alike to create a mixture with concrete. As terrazzo gained prominence in the United States in the early 1900’s, an influx of Italian immigrants followed. Terrazzo became the material selected in New York and other major cities signature buildings. Terrazzo, either epoxy or cement binder mixed with marble, granite, mother of pearl, or glass aggregates is then poured in place to create a smooth monolithic flooring system. Epoxy terrazzo is a very common system due to high end aesthetic and endless color options. Zinc, Aluminum, or Brass divider strips are often used to divide sections of the floor and change in color. After terrazzo is cured it is grinded, polished, and sealed.

  • Terrazzo can be used on vertical wall applications through a poured in place format or in precast terrazzo. Precast Terrazzo can also be used for wall base in a straight or cove format. Furthermore, Precast Terrazzo can be manufactured to produce stair tread and riser combination units, stringers, terrazzo wall cladding, countertops, and more.

  • Terrazzo Flooring projects duration vary based on complexity of design and building logistics. For smaller scale terrazzo projects installation can be completed within 8 days. For larger epoxy terrazzo projects and cement terrazzo, duration can extend to 4-5 times as long.
